Short answer: Samsung, Bosch and NVIDIA have all built engineering or R&D operations in Vietnam. Case study 2: How did Bosch grow a 4,000-person software team in Vietnam?

Company and context. Bosch Global Software Technologies Vietnam (BGSW Vietnam), the Vietnamese arm of Bosch's global software organisation.

Problem. Bosch needed scalable engineering capacity that sat inside its own global innovation network rather than with external vendors.

What they did. Established the Vietnam unit in 2010 and grew it steadily across two cities, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Results (company-reported). BGSW Vietnam states it has grown to about 4,000 associates delivering software engineering, digital transformation and enterprise services.

Takeaway. Sixteen years of continuous growth in the same location. Capability and retention compounded instead of plateauing, which is the argument for treating offshore staff as permanent team members rather than interchangeable contractors.

Case study 3: Why did NVIDIA choose Vietnam for its first R&D centre there?

Company and context. NVIDIA, the AI computing company, which competes globally for scarce AI engineering talent.

Opportunity. NVIDIA wanted an AI research footprint in a market with a fast-growing engineering base and government support.

What they did. On 5 December 2024, NVIDIA announced it was opening its first Vietnam research and development centre, in collaboration with the Vietnamese government, and framed the move as confidence in the country’s AI future.

Results. The centre is recent, so long-run outcomes are not yet public. The signal is the commitment itself: Vietnam is now being selected for scarce, high-end AI roles rather than volume work alone.

Takeaway. The ceiling on Vietnamese technical talent is higher than the "cheap offshore labour" framing suggests.
